Seeking "Backyard Inventors" for W Network
Do you have a unique invention? Have you found a genius solution to an everyday problem? If so, inventions guru Doug Hall wants to help.
W Network’s “Backyard Inventors” showcases the undiscovered talent, energy and raw passion of Canadian inventors who have yet to unleash their unique ideas on the world. In each episode, Doug Hall meets with a handful of inventors in their backyards, garages and basement workshops before choosing one inventor to take through his acclaimed Eureka! Ranch process. Selected inventors receive a personal invitation to the Eureka! Ranch satellite office in Toronto, where they will refine, market test and position their creation. Then, Doug will introduce them to an industry leader with the clout to buy or invest in their invention… and change their world forever.
Doug Hall is looking for Canadian candidates with inventions that meet the following criteria:
- Your invention has a WORKING PROTOTYPE.
- It is unique, visually interesting, and can be tested by Doug.
- It does not have a history of sales.
- It is for everyday use and something that every Canadian should own!
Taping of this series begins in late January, 2012. The sooner you submit your idea, the better your chances are of appearing on the show.

Sorry but what makes Doug Hall an invention guru? Other than self-promotion, there is no mention of what exactly he invented and what he successfully commercialized. The Wikipedia page on him only mentions that he went to Proctor & Gamble after graduating from the University of Maine. P&G is a huge invention machine and I would imagine that Mr. Hall was perhaps a member of a larger team of employees who perhaps did come up with new ideas for products. But what seems to be evident is that Mr. Hall was not self-employed or an inventor-entrepreneur who conceived and commercialized his own inventions. Having P&G behind you is not the same thing.
Did you guys bother doing any due diligence before promoting this?
Signed, an innovator
I do not know much about Doug Hall, thus the reason I am doing some research when coming across this article and ultimately your remark. I was seeking out information backers for, what I believe to be the next best thing, and came across "Backyard Inventors". I applied late in 2011 and though everyone wants to believe they have the "next best thing", I wanted confirmation by someone other than friends and family, and was surprisingly advised that my idea was under consideration for the show; confirming that there has to be at least a little bit of something there.
Now the journey to find out more info on the show and Mr. Hall...and this being the only negative remark I came across...I do not know what sources, other than a wikipedia article, you got your information from; but I do know that the bottom line when becoming successful; whether it be by way of a self proclaimed Inventor or Innovator "coming up with a new invention" or an everyday person coming up with a "real good idea", it's all in the marketing.
Mr. Hall coming up with a "few ideas" as you put it, was obviously all P&G needed to back him (if that truly be the case) and that's what it's all about. Finding people with the means to back you with your ideas. Does that mean that person is not an Inventor/Entrepreneur as you put it? Nope. It simply means he possess that above average set of marketing skills. In addition; an Entrepreneur is someone who, in few words, does many things, and it appears as if Mr. Hall actually does do many things. Also; have you heard of Eureka Ranch? Self Employment - again in few words means working for one's self and I believe this alone constitutes self employment.
Moving forward, we should all do our research and you so plainly pointed out, prior to publicizing and or prompting someone or something...read up a little more and hopefully you will rethink your thoughts on Mr. Hall and the potential harm such negative remarks can have on, not only Mr. Hall but a reputable production company.
